Steeper Partners with Point Designs to Expand Advanced Articulating Digit Provision to UK Patients
2025-04-22 Hits:
We're pleased to announce that Steeper are now the exclusive UK distributor for Point Designs mechanical articulating digits, meaning even more partial hand amputees can access the life-changing advantages of articulation and grip. This partnership not only allows us to continue to provide the best in prosthetic technology to our clients by strengthening our product portfolio but also aligns with our mission to empower and enhance lives.

Introducing Point Designs
Founded by a team of researchers from the Biomechatronics Development Laboratory at the University of Colorado, Point Designs is a company built on decades of cutting-edge research into neural interfaces, myoelectric control algorithms, and upper limb prosthetic design. Led by Professors Richard Weir and Jacob Segil, along with co-founders Dr. Levin Sliker and Stephen Huddle, the Point Designs team continues to advance the field of partial hand prosthetic design with expertise in additive manufacturing, mechanical design, and clinical care.

Point Designs unique technology uses high-strength titanium and durable construction, ensuring a prosthetic solution that is both long-lasting and highly functional. Each digit can move independently, allowing for a wide range of grip patterns, which is crucial for everyday activities such as holding a pen, using a smartphone, or lifting heavier objects - most digits in the Point Designs range have a load capacity of up to 68kg (150lb). This level of articulation and durability makes Point Designs devices a great option for patients who have lost one or more fingers or thumbs and can open up a world of possibilities for those who may not have been aware of such technology.

"By combining Steeper’s extensive distribution network and commitment to world-class patient care with Point Designs’ revolutionary technology, more partial hand amputees will have access to a solution that can transform their lives." Said Steeper Director of Products, Ian Rodger, "Together, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in upper limb prosthetic care."

Six different devices to suit a range of uses
Devices like the Point Digit feature a patented ratcheting mechanism with 11 locking positions and auto spring-back, all of which can be operated with one hand. The Point Digit Mini is ideal for users with smaller hands such as children, and the Point Partial helps users with partial finger amputations from the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint regain full grip functionality, ultimately increasing their independence and confidence. The Point Thumb, complete with integrated touchscreen compatible fingertip pads, helps users to perform grasping and pinching motions and when paired with the Point Pivot+ users can benefit from an extra 19 locking levels of adduction/abduction.

If you're an amputee with partial hand/finger loss and would like to find out if Point Designs mechanical articulating digits could benefit you, speak to your prosthetist today. Clinicians can place an order by contacting our friendly Customer Services Team.
